1. ) grind or grind up transitive to break something into very small pieces or powder, by using a machine or by crushing it between two hard surfaces:
The mill was used for grinding corn until the 17th century.

A truck came grinding up the hill.

1. ) if a vehicle grinds to a halt, it moves more and more slowly until it finally stops:
The traffic finally ground to a halt outside the station.
2. ) if a process or a country grinds to a halt, things gradually get slower until they finally stop:
There are signs that the economy is grinding to a halt.
